Alphabet Letters – Origins and Other Fun Facts

Alphabet LettersAlphabet letters are used by at least half of the world’s population. Though not all languages would use the same set of alphabets, alphabet letters all have one thing in common, and that is the fact that when combined together, they can form syllables and words which expresses an idea or a message. Find out more about them by reading on below.

Alphabet Letters – What Are They?

Letters are symbols that represents sounds which when combined together forms syllables which in turn makes up words. With the use of having an alphabetical system, a certain language can have a written form which makes transmission of information over vast distances in time and space possible.

Alphabet Letters – Origins of Where They Are From

The word ‘letter’ came from the French term ‘lettre’, which was derived from the Latin ‘littera’, meaning writing tablet which can further trace back its origins from the Greeks and Etruscans. The word ‘letter’ became a part of the English language about 900 years ago.

The word ‘letter’ is used to signify a sound, which is why it is associated with phonetics. Letters or letter forms are what comprises an alphabet. Usually, a letter is associated with more than one sound or phoneme, in which it is then called a digraph (if comprised of two letters) or a trigraph (if comprised of three letters).

Alphabet Letters – What Are Characteristics of Alphabet Letters?

An alphabet letter is different from a form of writing in which a symbol represents an idea, such as that used in Chinese Alphabet and Egyptian Alphabet. The following are more characteristics of alphabet letters:

Alphabet letters have a certain specific name

Sometimes, the names can differ as well. The way the name differs is depending on the dialect, language and history of the letter. An example of this is the letter Z, which is called Zee in the US and is called Zed in other countries.

Alphabet letters may represent numbers

In the case of Roman Numerals for instance, numbers are written in the form of letters.

Alphabet letters can represent one or more sounds

For example, in Spanish, the letter C can be used to convey a [k] sound or an [s] sound. This can be exemplified by the Spanish words Casita, wherein C is pronounced as [k] and Centimo, wherein C is pronounced as [s].

Alphabet letters have a prescribed order

Otherwise known as alphabetical order, it pertains to how the letters are arranged in their alphabet. For example, in English alphabet, ñ and n are sorted as the same but in Spanish alphabet, they are sorted as separate letters.

Alphabet Letters – Why are They Significant?

What makes alphabet letters so important is that without them, communication as we know today will not be possible. Even computer programming uses alphabet letters. Can you imagine not having a written language? Without the ability to write up ideas and thoughts, civilization will not flourish as it has. We will not have the internet, and there is almost no way for the fast dissemination of information which made globalization possible. Isn’t it great that we have alphabet letters?

Chinese Alphabet

chinese alphabetThe Chinese Alphabet has evolved from several origins over thousands of years to give us the Chinese writing system of today. As we all know, China is a vast country which has one of the oldest and the best civilizations on earth. It is no wonder that the origins and facts about the Chinese Alphabet would be as culturally rich as the country from which it came from. So let us now talk about the fun facts of the Chinese Alphabet, shall we?

The Chinese Alphabet Is Not Really an Alphabet

It is actually a writing script. To understand this, let us talk about the characteristics of alphabets. Alphabets consists of letters or letter forms which are written together to form syllables that form words. An alphabet letter usually does not stand on its own, except maybe the letter A in western alphabet which is a word in itself. The Chinese form of writing consists of Characters which represents a syllable. The characters can be a word in itself or be grouped together to form words or represent ideas. The best way to describe the Chinese way of writing is that it is a non-alphabetic script, although people who may not know that may call the Chinese Characters or Script as an Alphabet. It is excusable for people to use the wrong term but we just want to be clear that the Chinese way of writing is not the same as what is defined as an alphabet in the west.

Chinese Alphabet is a Way to Represent Ideas

The fact is that the Chinese form of writing uses Characters. These Characters are at times words in their own right. This means that Chinese Characters are not used as letters (with perhaps the exception of a few) but rather used as words or syllables that represents ideas or messages.

The Chinese Alphabet or Way of Writing has over 6,500 Characters

Chinese is a very complex language. Whereas it can take a person less than a year to master the English Alphabet and to read and write using it, learning to communicate in written form for Chinese takes years. Education of scribes takes years in China before they can write all the Chinese Characters. This is why Chinese Calligraphy is considered as a form of art in China, especially in ancient times. Today, modern Chinese uses pinyin which is a much simpler form of writing and reading Chinese.

Chinese Alphabet is Actually the Use of Pictograms

Chinese Characters are actually pictograms. It is closer to hieroglyphics than it is to the English Alphabet. Both the Chinese and ancient Egyptian form of writing utilizes picture words or pictograms to represent words and ideas. The difference would be that the Egyptians used picture drawings to represent words and ideas whereas the Chinese used stick figures to represent words and ideas, making it more complex and rich at the same time.

With Chinese being spoken by more than a billion people, knowing a bit more about the written form of the language is a fun way to understand the language, the culture and people of China. Having cleared the misconceptions about having a Chinese version of an alphabet, you are on your way to perhaps learning the beautiful written form of the Chinese language.

Product of The Genius

The indie filmmaker Walt Disney carries mountain of ideas with light cash to produce cartoons back in the day. Little did he know that the birth of Mickey Mouse would put him in the map of superstardom and pop culture forever. He secured a deal with Columbia Pictures following warm audience reception of Mickey.

As Walt Disney kingdom rises to the top, Walt paid tribute to Mickey Mouse and said,

I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.

mickey mouse with walt disneyWalt Disney has lived up to his artistic sense and potential. His first cartoon strips in comics and newspapers depicted patriotic scenes of World War 1. He was attempted to join the Army, but was rejected and opted to join Red Cross instead. He was sent to France to drive an ambulance at the age of 16.

Before he died in 1966, he was regarded as business magnate, brilliant animator, director, voice actor and the one that forever changed the landscape of cartoons. During his lifetime, Walt won 22 awards, got 59 nominations and 4 honorary citations from no less than the Academy Awards.

Even after his death, The Walt Disney Company remains to be a profitable organization with that captured $45 billion in annual revenue last 2013.

History

To calculate Mickey Mouse’ overarching influence to pop culture is just mind-boggling. It was in 1928 when Mickey Mouse was conceived. From then on, the character has lorded and reigned over the entire Walt Disney Co. empire. It is second to none in the success ranking of all fictional characters created and introduced to the market. Even at old age, Mickey Mouse beats contemporary characters such as Spongebob, Pokemon and Spider Man in worldwide sales.

mickey mouse old picHe was first seen in sound cartoon Steamboat Willie. The idea of Mickey Mouse was formed during a train ride from the Big Apple to Los Angeles. While it was Walt Disney who drew and gave birth to the character, Ub Iwerkes refurbished it to the image that people recognize today.

His original name was Mortimer and he was wearing this funny velvet pants. After a few years, Mickey Mouse appeared in more than 80 cartoon shows. Within the 40’s and 50’s period, his fellows including Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck joined him. It was in 1955 where Mickey started being the host of Disneyland. [/tab]

The salt to Mickey’s sweet, Donald Duck was introduced in 1934, and the two became inseparable. When the studio hits rough spot in the 1940’s, the mouse’s expanse saved the day by way of merchandise sales. Mickey first tasted a makeover in 1935, care of a young animator named Fred Moore. This man gave the character its pear-shaped body, white gloves, shortened nose and essentially made him cuter.
  1. Did you know what inspired the famous bejeweled gloves of the King of Pop? It is very interesting to note that the late Michael Jackson was smitten by the antics and was a big fan of Mickey Mouse.
  2. Did you also know that Mickey has only three fingers and a thumb? If you are a keen observer, you may have noticed this. The reason behind this was five digits are too many for a mouse.

Mickey’s cheerful, pleasant and sunny demeanor is his best asset. After invading the silver screen (black and white and colored alike), he set sail and dominated the world of comics from Americas to Europe. Today, a visit to any of Disneyland peppered in this sphere of existence would never be complete without saying hi to Mickey Mouse and his gang.

Mickey and Minnie

mickey mouse with minnieMinerva Mouse, fondly and widely known as Minnie Mouse is presented to the world as Mickey Mouse’s girlfriend. She is the bestfriend of Daisy Duck (who happens to be the girlfriend of Donald Duck, Mickey’s partner in crime).

While Mickey Mouse was making a name for himself, he could not fill the void alone. Coupled with Walt and Ub’s hunger for forging potential sweethearts, Minnie Mouse enters the scene. At present, her trademark outfit is a short polka dot dress with matching bow and white gloves. Believe it or not, the initial voice behind the damsel in distress was in fact Walt himself.

Merchandise

Mickey Mouse is timeless. If you want to be reminded of your good old childhood memories, there are tons of collectibles that you can buy from everywhere. Mickey’s brand and face are mostly seen in home decorations, toys, clothes, towels, figurines, laptop skins and even greeting cards.

mickey mouse walk of fame

The tandem of Mickey and Minnie Mouse is perhaps the most successful pair in history of animated love. Together, they sell like hotcakes. Merchandise such as drinking bottles, courier bag, bath towels, blankets, lamps, toddler bed, open sofa, kiddie pool, potty training system, plates, mugs, puzzles, watches, gourmet kitchenware and the famous ears are easy to find in most online stores.

If people are to create a mountain of Mickey Mouse merchandise today, wrist watches would be on top, and few sweatshirts on the side. A non-alcoholic beverage was also named after him – The Mickey Mouse cocktail. It’s a mixture of ice cream, tomato juice and cola.mickey mouse merchandise

Mickey Mouse has defined generations. And, there is no sign of slowing down in the years or decades to come. Whether it’s Disneyland in Paris, Hongkong or Florida, the brightest is still Mickey Mouse.

Arabic Alphabet

Arabic AlphabetThe Arabic Alphabet is used by hundreds of millions of people all over the world. It is the writing form of one of the widely used languages in both ancient and modern times. Get to know this Arabic form of writing as you read on the 7 Must Know Facts about the Arabic Alphabet below.

The Arabic Alphabet is Thousands of Years Old

The Arabic Alphabet is derived from Nabataean Aramaic almost two thousand years ago. Although some accounts would say that the alphabet is just a little bit over 1000 years old, inscriptions written in Arabic have been found dating back from about 500 years AD, making it clear that the writing system is a lot older than previously thought.

The Arabic Alphabet is Related to the Hebrew Alephbet

Because the Arabic way of writing has Aramaic roots, it is safe to say that it is also related to Hebrew Alphabet from which Aramaic evolved. They all share a common lineage from Phoenician letter forms with the Arabic Alphabet being unique by the addition of dots in its letter forms making it a visually beautiful way of writing.

The Arabic Alphabet Has Two Main Types

As of present day, we have Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic. The Modern Standard Arabic is what is used by modern speakers and can be understood by all of the Arabic world. The Classical Arabic is what was used to write the Q’uran. It is more archaic and even though Islamic people can recite the contents of the Q’uran, not everyone can read or understand it in its original written form.

The Arabic Alphabet has 28 Letters

This is interesting because the modern western alphabet has 26, the Hebrew Alphabet has 22. It shows how related the various forms of writing we have today are from each other and how much commonality they have.

The Arabic Alphabet May Have Over 30 Modern Variations

Because modern Arabic has over 30 colloquial varieties, it just follows that the way it is written may have slight variations as well. Being spoken by over 220 million individuals, it is easy to see how the writing forms may evolve more as the years go by, with various regions making both the Arabic language and its writing form adapted to their culture and location.

The Arabic Alphabet is Written from Right To Left

The western way of writing is from left to the right of the page, the eastern languages is usually from the top of the page to the bottom or horizontal, but the Arabic way of writing is from the right side to the left side of the page. Although it is not the only writing form that uses this method, it does add a uniqueness to the Arabic Alphabet that is fun to know even though you may not be a language or writing expert.

The Arabic Alphabet is Written in a Cursive Form

Once of the most ornate and beautiful forms of writing, writing in Arabic is inherently beautiful because of the quality of its letter forms to change shape as the letters are joined together to form words. The combination of this and the dots in the letters make for an almost embroidery like form of writing which can be appreciated even by those unfamiliar with Arabic Alphabet.

Hebrew Alphabet - A brief introduction

Hebrew AlphabetBeing one of the oldest writing systems, the Hebrew Alphabet is one of the types of writing systems that has traversed the ravages of time and is still in use today. Dig in and know more about the Hebrew Writing System by reading below:

Hebrew Alphabet Is in Use by Around 5 Million People Today

More than 5 million people speak and write in Hebrew as of present time, and of course, they do read and write using the Hebrew Alphabet; making it one of the oldest languages and writing systems to be successfully revived from ancient times. Around 500 BC, Hebrew was replaced by Aramaic as the common language of the Israelites and so the writing system and the language both suffered in popularity. It is only about 100 years ago that people begun having an interest in relearning the language and to use it in everyday life as opposed to it being used only in religious and scholarly texts.

Hebrew Alphabet Has Divine Origins

According from spoken history by Hebrews, the writing system was taught by God himself to a man named Adam ha-rishon who taught it to his male offsprings who taught it to their offsprings until it became widely used thousands of years ago.

Hebrew Alphabet is Called Alephbet, not Alphabet

The term ‘alphabet’ was coined by the Greeks to represent the first two letters of their alphabet. The Hebrews, on the other hand calls their letter forms ‘alephbet’ which is also derived from the first two letters of their writing system, Aleph and Bet.

Hebrew Alphabet Has 22 Letter Forms

Actually, those 22 Letter Forms only represents the consonants. Later on, vowel sounds have been added and improved the Hebrew Alephbet to its present form today.

Hebrew Alphabet is Related to Phoenician And Greek Scripts

Around 3000 years ago, several languages and forms of writing developed, and one of those is the Hebrew Alephbet or alphabet. Scholars and researches have studied its origins and have stated that it is either derived from Phoenician Alphabet or it at least developed alongside with. This means that it is indeed one of the oldest forms of writing still in use today.

Hebrew Alphabet Letters have Several Pronunciations

Because it is used to write several variations of Hebrew and Jewish languages, such as Yiddish, Paleo Hebrew, Ladino, and Judeo-Arabic, it just follows that pronunciation may differ. To date, the letters in the Hebrew Alephbet can be pronounced in Modern Hebrew phonology, Biblical Hebrew phonology, and Yiddish phonology.

Hebrew Alphabet is Also used as a Number System, the Hebrew Numeral

Much like the use of the Greek Alphabet in Roman Numerals, the Hebrew Alephbet or alphabet is also used to denote number values and is used as a number system up to this day. Usually, it is used as such in the Hebrew Calendar and in religious and mystic context.

Be it an interest in old scripts or perhaps an interest in reading the Bible’s Old Testament in its original text, understanding, knowing and learning the Hebrew Alphabet is a fun adventure to an ancient and modern world all woven together with the use of a common language. We hope that this article has given you some insights and some fun facts about the Hebrew Alphabet.

Greek Alphabet – 8 Must Know Facts about the Greek Alphabet

greek alphabetThe Greek Alphabet has fascinated a lot of people from ancient to modern times. It has been a part of the western world since the dawn of history and is still very much a part of us today. If you want to know more about the amazing facts about it, then read on the must know facts about the Greek Alphabet:

Greek Alphabet – Is the Mother of Modern Alphabet

A majority of all the languages based in the west, or European in origin can trace their alphabet to the one used by the Greeks directly or indirectly. Isn’t it amazing that we can trace a huge part of our collective cultures from the Greek advancements including having a developed writing system?

Greek Alphabet – Is Not Originally Greek

It has roots from Phoenicia. According to legends, a Phoenician named Cadmus brought the alphabet to Greece. This has been proven by language experts who can attest that the Greek letter forms indeed have letter forms similar to the ones used by Phoenicians thousands of years ago.

Greek Alphabet – Is More Than 3,000 Years Old

Although it could be older, it is estimated that the Greek letter forms was first made around 1000 to 800 years before the birth of Christ, which makes it around 3,000 years old as of today. Prior to this time, writing is not a common or a known practice for the Greeks. After being introduced to Greece about 1000-800 BC, it has flourished and spread across what is present day Europe at that time and now, the whole world.

Greek Alphabet – Is From Where the Term Alphabet Came From

We would not even have the word ‘alphabet’ if not from the first two letters of the Greek Alphabet. It was derived from the first two letters, alpha and beta, which when fused and shortened gave rise to the term ‘alphabet’.

Greek Alphabet – Is Used as a Counting System Too

The Roman Numerals and Numbers uses letter forms or symbols derived from the Greek Alphabet.

Greek Alphabet – Is Used in Science and Math

We would not have mathematical formulas if not with the use of the letter forms from the alphabet. Their use makes it possible to represent complex mathematical concepts into simplified and much shortened form.

Greek Alphabet – Why is it used by Sororities and Fraternities

It is often a case that a sorority or a fraternity would have a name which sounds like the pronunciation of the Greek Letters. The reason for this is that sororities and fraternities often name themselves to represent their motto. They use the initials of their motto to name their group in Greek to maintain the anonymity of what they stand for.

Greek Alphabet – Why is it Significant?

Without the Greek Alphabet, we would not have our western form of writing that we have today. Perhaps we would be writing in Chinese characters or maybe in Arabic. The world would be totally different. As the modern alphabet (which is derived from the Greek one) is very easy to learn and can be adapted for use by almost all languages, it has enabled the fast transport of information, from which we owe what we have as internet and globalization today.

Spider Bites – Identification and Treatment

spider bitesSpider bites may be one of the most common bug bites which people think they have. Every year, thousands, if not millions of people around the world are bitten by spiders, but not all of those who think they got bitten by a spider have spider bites. Spiders are feared by humans from time immemorial. People have a deep seated fear of spiders and tend to blame any unexplained bug bite on the eight-legged creatures, so how do we identify real spider bites from other bug bites and how are they treated?

Spider Bites – What do Spider Bites Look Like?

Spider bites have a range of looks depending on which specific spider caused the bite. More so, a lot of those thought to be spider bites are actually bites from the two more common bugs, mosquitoes and bed bugs. The only 100% sure way of identifying spider bites is of course to see the spider actually causing the bite. For this reason, it is important to first rule out that a bite is caused by these two creatures before thinking it was caused by a spider.

Toxicity

Key Manifestations

Black Widow SpiderA black widow bite usually is simply a red dot or a red spot. Fang marks might be visible on some cases.Toxic bite which can be very fatal. Immediate medical attention is advised.A black widow bite is described as very painful. The pain is very intense and immediate and is oftentimes accompanied by muscle cramping that lasts for days up to a few weeks. The elderly and the young are very vulnerable to the venom more so if they start manifesting nausea, and fever.

After identifying what kind of spider bite a person has, it is now time to know the next step, which is: How to treat a spider bite?

Spider Bites – Spider Bite Treatment

Spider bites, first and foremost, should be given first aid as soon as it is identified. The following are the steps on how to treat a spider bite:

Spider Bite Treatment

1. Spider bites need to be identified first as really a bite from a spider.

2. Elevate the part of the body bitten by a spider to see it better and to minimize the spread of the venom. Nearly all spider bites have venom that has been injected inside the bitten area.

3. Identify if the spider bite is from the hobo spider, the brown recluse, or the black widow. If so, seek immediate medical attention; but if not, proceed with the next steps.

4. If the bite is very new, wash it with mild soap and water or use an antibiotic cream to prevent it from getting infected.

5. Spider bites can trigger a reaction other than pain and swelling. Take note of and monitor the symptoms experienced. Antihistamines may be taken to minimize itching and acetaminophen may be taken to minimize the pain.

6. If symptoms worsen or goes beyond pain and swelling, immediately seek medical attention. Anything beyond pain, swelling and itchiness can be a complication of spider bites and must be taken seriously.

Insect Bites – Identification, Signs, Symptoms and Treatment Guide

insect bitesInsect bites are one of the most common and irritating things which has plagued mankind since the dawn of time. Since insects comprise the majority of all living organisms, it is nearly impossible to avoid them and their bites. An insect will bite for two main reasons, to feed or to defend itself. No matter what reason the insect has for taking a bite, their bites can cause skin problems to humans and animals. In some cases, insect bites can even carry diseases which can be very harmful or even fatal to both humans and animals.

Insect Bites – Identification

Identification of insect bites vary greatly depending on what specific insect caused the bite. For a lot of cases, the bites are undetectable or does not cause any problem. For larger insects with large chelicerae or mouth part, skin tear and pain plus bleeding might be present. For insects with stingers and venom, their bite might be more obvious because of the signs and symptoms which follows after a bite. It is best to note too that spider bites are not generally categorized as an insect bite.

Insect Bites – Signs and Symptoms

Insect bites cause some signs and symptoms because of the venom that some insects have. Once injected on the skin of the bitten human or animal, the venom will cause signs and symptoms ranging from local skin reaction to allergic reaction. In some cases, as in the case of disease carrying insects, their bites can cause transmission of diseases.

Mild Reaction Signs and Symptoms

Severe Reaction Signs and Symptoms

  • Rashes

  • Swelling of the bitten area

  • Itchiness in the area of the bite

Insect Bites – First Aid and Treatment

Although the best treatment for any bite is still prevention of the bite, in which case insect traps and control would be a great thing to have, still, bites do happen. Knowing how to deal with the bite is important to prevent further aggravation of the signs and symptoms.

Insect Bites First Aid and Treatment Guide

Insect with Biting Mouthparts

Insects with Venom

Insect with Sting

Insects with biting mouth parts can cause very visible skin tears. 1. The primary thing to do is to clean the area with mild soap and water.

2. Observe the bitten area for what type of reaction it will cause. Local and mild reaction (see table above) can be treated at home. Keeping the bitten area clean until fully healed and observation of signs and symptoms are usually all that is needed.

Insects with venom typically cause an immediate reaction which is very visible. The bitten area would most often have a puncture wound or two puncture wounds through which the venom was injected.

1. Clean the area with mild soap and water.

2. Observe the bitten area for the effect of the venom. Insects with venom causes mild to severe reaction (see table above). Mild reactions can be treated at home but any sign of severe reaction should immediately receive medical attention.

Bees and Wasps are some of the insects which has stingers. With these insects, the stinger is typically left attached to the skin of the stung individual. The following measures should be done:

1. Take the stinger off by scraping it away from the skin with the use of a credit card, or paper. Avoid squishing the stinger to avoid injecting more venom unto the skin. Do not use a tweezer.

2. Observe the stung area. Stings can cause mild to severe reaction to insect bites (see table above). Mild reactions can benefit from home treatment but anything more than local and mild reaction should be brought to the attention of a medical professional.

Treatment for severe reaction to insect bites should always be prompt medical attention. Do not attempt to treat a severe reaction without a doctor’s supervision. Severe reaction to insect bites may be life threatening and should be taken seriously.
